LRS: a new business model for free software
LinboxFAS is a French free software pionneer company since 1996. Today LinboxFAS is innovating by opening the source code of its computer asset management software : the Linbox Rescue Server.
The Linbox Rescue Server (LRS) is the result of more than 6 man*years of research and development, fully financed by LinboxFAS. This software exists and is used in many companies and administrations.
The operation started on tuesday the 5th of april. It relies on the capitalization of software license sales. The goal of LinboxFAS is to open the source code of the software, as soon as the investments made around the product will have been amortized thanks to the selling of licenses.
Each license feeds a counter, available here . This counter allows to visualise the sum that remains to be amortized. Each license sale leads to the corresponding diminution of the displayed amount. When the counter will reach 0, the software will be fully released under GPL.
To show the committment of LinboxFAS regarding free software, an intermediate threshold was previously defined and reached : the freeing of all software parts related to free OSes. As such the LRS is a powerful deployment, asset management, backup solution for GNU/Linux PCs. For a comparison between the Libre/Free version of the LRS and the proprietary one please check the comparison page and the Libre/Free LRS dedicated site http://lrs.linbox.org .
